What is naturopathic medicine?
Usually patients end up at naturopathic doctors after they've exhausted "conventional medicine." Only after trying everything else out and finally doing their own research do most patients discover the power of natural medicine. Most people have never heard about naturopathic medicine and find it hard to believe that this form of medicine even exists in the first place. It's almost too good to be true... but it's not.
Getting to the deeper cause
Naturopathic medicine is a growing field in medicine that seeks to understand the cause of illness, using conventional science and traditional medicine. What makes NDs different is their approach to the patient. We look at the whole person experiencing the illness, across their entire lifetime, within the physical body and psychology. And for treatment, NDs use therapies that build the body's ability to heal itself while also directly addressing symptoms.
Level of education
Naturopathic physicians (NMD or ND) are trained in conventional AND alternative medicine to offer primary care or specialty medicine. We spend 4 years in a rigorous medical school and do extensive clinical training in specific specialties. NDs look to modern science to inform their clinical decisions, and use the safest and effective methods to produce a cure, first using natural methods like herbal medicine, nutrition, physical medicine, and homeopathy. Then, if needed NDs are licensed to prescribe drugs and are trained to know when to refer a patient to an emergency room or MD specialist.
Most importantly, NDs think about how the whole body is affected by illness, and see all the parts of the body connected together. Naturopathic education emphasizes physiology and biochemistry more than any other form of medicine, allowing the ND to solve complex problems that present in each patient uniquely.

Spending time with your doctor
Naturopathic visits typically last 45-90mins, with most of that time spent in direct contact with the doctor. NDs believe it is important to spend the time to listen to each patient to discover what makes them unique and then educate them in healthy lifestyle choices.
This means that patient's walk away from each visit with a sense of satisfaction of being heard. Patient's develop deep relationships with their naturopathic doctor that provide the basis for long lasting vitality.
